In the franchise's story, "Fairilu" are fairies of flowers, insects, mermaids, or other entities that are born from "Farilu Seeds." All Fairilu are born with their own key, and they must search to find and open the door that fits only their key. Once the Fairilu pass through the doors, they mature. The doors are also related to the human world.
The multimedia project also includes merchandise, books, a game, and events. The franchise will launch with stationary, accessories, bags, and other merchandise from Sanrio in March 2016. Other Fairilu that will apppear in the franchise include: other Flower Farilu, Mermaid Farilu, Mushroom Farilu, Veggie Farilu, Bugs Farilu, Weather Farilu, and Cool Girl Farilu.
The project is the second multimedia character collaborative project for the two companies after they launched the Jewelpet franchise in 2008. Rilu Rilu Fairilu is similarly geared toward elementary school-age girls.
