Hawaii-based distributor JN Productions' Generation Kikaida line will release the Kikaider: Reboot film on DVD in North America in December. The North American premiere of the Kikaider Reboot film screened in Honolulu from October 10-30.
The film is a remake of the 1970s Jinzou Ningen Kikaider television series. It opened in Japan on May 24.
The film's story takes place in a future when the "Ark Project" uses robots to solve problems that the Japanese government cannot solve with human power alone. When robot engineering expert Nobuhiko Kōmyōji dies, his rivals steal his plans and start causing chaos until a conscious robot Jiro (Kikaider), created by Kōmyōji, appears as the hero.
Jingi Irie (Risō no Musuko, Take Five) stars as Jiro/Kikaider, Ryūji Harada plays Dr. Komyoji, Aimi Satsukawa (Nezumi, Edo wo Hashiru; True Love) plays Dr. Komyoji's daughter Mitsuko, and Maryjun Takahashi (Rurouni Kenshin films, Ushijima the Loan Shark 2) plays Android Mari. The film also stars Kazushige Nagashima, Hirotarō Honda, and Daisuke Ban, who starred as the protagonist Jiro, as psychologist Kyujiro Maeno.
Ten Shimoyama (SHINOBI - Heart Under Blade, Blood) directed the film. The script was developed over a period of two years.
